Seamless steel pipe is a long steel product with a hollow cross-section and no seams around it.
I. Extensive use
Due to its hollow cross-section, seamless steel pipe is often used in large quantities as a pipeline for transporting fluids. Compared with solid steel products such as round steel, when the bending and torsional strength are the same, it is lighter in weight and is an economical cross-section steel. It is widely used in the manufacture of structural parts and mechanical parts, such as oil drill pipes, automobile transmission shafts, bicycle frames, and steel scaffolding used in construction. General-purpose seamless steel pipes are rolled from ordinary carbon structural steel, low-alloy structural steel, or alloy structural steel. They have a large output and are mainly used as pipelines for transporting fluids or structural parts.
II. Clear supply classification
According to different uses, seamless steel pipes can be supplied in three categories: supply according to chemical composition and mechanical properties; supply according to mechanical properties; supply according to hydrostatic test. Pipes supplied in categories a and b also need to be subjected to hydrostatic tests if they are used to withstand liquid pressure.
III. Comparison with welded steel pipes
Welded steel pipes, also known as welded pipes, are made by welding steel plates or steel strips after being formed by curling. Its production process is simple, the efficiency is high, there are many varieties and specifications, and the equipment investment is low, but the general strength is lower than that of seamless steel pipes.
Since the 1930s, with the rapid development of continuous rolling production of high-quality strip steel and the progress of welding and inspection technologies, the weld quality has been continuously improved, and the varieties and specifications of welded steel pipes have been increasing day by day, and they have replaced seamless steel pipes in more and more fields. Welded steel pipes are divided into straight seam welded pipes and spiral welded pipes according to the weld form.
Straight seam welded pipes have a simple production process, high production efficiency, low cost, and rapid development. The strength of spiral welded pipes is generally higher than that of straight seam welded pipes. It can use narrower blanks to produce welded pipes with larger diameters, and can also use blanks of the same width to produce welded pipes with different diameters. However, compared with straight seam pipes of the same length, the weld length increases by 30% - 100%, and the production speed is lower. Therefore, most of the welded pipes with smaller diameters use straight seam welding, and most of the welded pipes with large diameters use spiral welding.
